terarium lab write up
The terrarium lab is went very well, Spencer and I took a different approach and did succulents as plants and they worked pretty well over the two breaks. Spencer took them on thanksgiving break, and I took them on winter break. As you can see in the pictures down below, we watered them really well. they are thriving right now so hopefully they stay that way throughout. Our objective was to have a plant terrarium that was going to last all the way past winter break. Spencer and I did a great job of that.
The materials we used were;
Medium sized plastic bowl
succulent plants
Cactus soil
pebbles
Earthworms
Bugs
Sand
The method: Since they were succulents they did not need a lot of water so we just watered them once a week and it worked very well
Our observations we made were that it has been growing roots and new leaves are sprouting. There is also little insects in our terrarium as well
Analysis: The biotic factors are that it is doing very well it's not dying at all and it is still going strong.
The abiotic factors are that it is still very green and there is a lot more sprouts of leaves.
Nutrient Cycles: We had a variety of nutrient cycles in our terrarium. For our water cycle, we watered the plants, the plants took in the water, and then got eaten slightly. Not much more. For our carbon cycle, it went from the air, to the plant, to the animal eating the plant, to the dead bug in the ground. With regards to the nitrogen cycle, the nitrogen goes from the soil to the plant, to the animal, and back to the soil when the animal dies.

reflection
The terrarium project went very well. We watered the plants every other day and they were sprouting new leaves every time we saw it. Right now I have it at my house and its getting watered daily. This lab was fun and I would like to do it again The peaks were that we picked succulents for our terrarium and they are very good plants because they don't need to be watered very often. Another peak is that Spencer and I worked very well together and we took turns taking care of the terrarium. The only pit was that we may have forgotten to water it one day but since it is a succulent, its okay. What I learned about myself is that I know how to take care of a plant. One thing I need to work on is not watering the plants too much.
